Fort Mill man fled accident, abandoned 2 injured children
ROCK HILL A Fort Mill driver told police he was scared and didn’t know what to do Friday when he rear-ended a pickup near downtown Rock Hill and then fled on foot – leaving behind two injured young children.
Richard Michael Kordelski, 28, is charged with unlawful conduct toward a child, leaving the scene of an accident and driving under suspension, according to Rock Hill Police documents.
At about 4 p.m. Friday, officers went to the 600 block of Charlotte Avenue after receiving calls about an accident, the report states. They spoke with the 65-year-old driver of a Nissan Frontier pickup, which had been rear-ended by a Ford Escort parked in the middle of the road with a damaged hood.
The pickup driver told police the Escort’s driver, identified as Kordelski, left the scene on foot. Several of Kordelski’s friends arrived at the scene and told officers that two boys, ages 5 and 8, were in the car at the time of the wreck and were “abandoned” by Kordelski when he left, according to the report.
The 5-year-old, who had been sitting in the back seat, had blood on his face, the report states, and the 8-year-old sitting in the front seat complained of mild head pain after he was struck by an airbag. Police say Kordelski and the children live at the same address.
Police called Kordelski and convinced him to return to the accident site, the report states. Kordelski told police he was scared and didn’t know what to do after the accident, so he ran away.
Police took Kordelski to the Rock Hill jail, where they found that he had a 2008 conviction for driving under suspension.
A city magistrate set a $15,000 bond Saturday before he was transferred to the York County Detention Center and later released.

Dog mauls woman to death in SC home
HODGES, S.C. —
Authorities said a 65-year-old woman was mauled to death by a dog while she was babysitting a toddler at a Hodges home.
Greenwood County deputies said another child in the home called 911 around 8 p.m. Tuesday to report the dog attack and that she had got the other people in the home out safely.
Authorities said officers found a bit pull with blood on it in the home and the body of Betty Todd. She had been bitten in the neck, head and face.
The dog was aggressive toward deputies, but the animal's owner arrived and was able to get the dog into a room until an animal control officer could arrive.
Deputies said they likely won't file charges in the case.

A 23-year-old Rock Hill woman was flown to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte with serious injuries Saturday after an alleged drunk driver ran a red light and crashed into her car, authorities said.
Ten minutes earlier the same driver had crashed his Ford Taurus into two cars in the parking lot of a McDonald’s off Cherry Road and driven away, Rock Hill Police Lt. Brad Redfearn said.
When police arrived at the fast food restaurant, they received a call about a wreck on Constitution Boulevard, Redfearn said.
A woman was driving south on Constitution toward Cherry Road in a Honda Accord at 12:40 p.m. when the Taurus, going west on Westerwood Drive, ran a red light and hit the woman’s car on the driver’s side.
Marcel L. Dyess, 20, of Rock Hill was arrested in connection with both accidents. He is charged with felony driving under the influence, possession of marijuana, driving under suspension and leaving the scene of an accident with serious bodily injury. He is held at the York County Detention Center on a $95,000 bond.
Police are not releasing the woman’s name because her family hasn’t been notified yet, Redfearn said.

ROCK HILL — A Rock Hill motorcyclist led police on a New Year’s Eve chase before crashing into several cars and suffering serious injuries.
Just before midnight on Monday, police saw two motorcycles speeding near East White Street, according to a Rock Hill police report. The motorcycles turned left onto Pinewood Road, the report states, where officers observed a 1997 Harley Davidson drive off the road and into a field, nearly hitting a sign and tree.
Police tried to pull over the motorcycle, but the rider accelerated and tried to evade officers, the report states. Police followed as the motorcycle nearly wrecking on Belleview Road before turning right onto Eastwood Drive, where the motorcyclist crashed into several cars.
The driver, a 48-year-old man whose name was not listed on the report, was seriously injured, police said. EMS and the Rock Hill Fire Department tended to his injuries while the Highway Patrol and police investigated the crash.

ANDERSON, S.C. — One person has been killed and another injured following a chase involving an Anderson County sheriff's deputy.
Officials say the chased vehicle crashed around 1 p.m. Tuesday.
Twenty-seven-year-old Bryan Corey Madden of Anderson was killed. A woman in the car was in critical condition in a Greenville hospital.
Coroner Greg Shore says Madden died at the scene.
Sheriff's spokesman Chad McBride says the chase began when a deputy tried to stop a vehicle he thought had been stolen. Madden lost control of the car in a curve and crashed into some trees.
McBride says the deputy was not involved in the crash and was not hurt.

Fort Mill woman crash on SC 5
By Jonathan McFadden — jmcfadden@heraldonline.com
ROCK HILL — A York County Sheriff's deputy and an elderly Fort Mill woman were both involved in a Tuesday afternoon in a car crash in Rock Hill.
Deputy Gregory Ryan Garrison, 28, was driving a 2008 four-door Crown Victoria around 4:30 p.m., traveling towards Rock Hill on S.C. 5 when Fort Mill's Lois Thomas, 82, tried to make a left turn in front of him from Chesbrough Boulevard, said Lance Cpl. Billy Elder with the Highway Patrol.
Thomas was driving 2013 four-door Chevrolet, Elder said. She was leaving Park Pointe Village, an assisted living home off S.C. 5, when she turned in front of Garrison.
Thomas was taken to Piedmont Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, he said. The accident halted traffic for about an hour.
Garrison did not suffer any major injuries, said Trent Faris, Sheriff's Office spokesman, but Thomas had a broken arm.
Officials haven't filed any charges, Elder said. They also haven't determined if both drivers were wearing seat belts.

Four crashes were reported within an hour-and-a-half of one another Sunday on Interstate 77 near Chester County during a Thanksgiving weekend that saw eight people killed on the state’s highways.
Between 8 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Sunday, state troopers responded to four “minor” crashes on I-77 that halted and congested traffic, said Lance Cpl. Billy Elder with the Highway Patrol.
Elder didn’t have details on the accidents but said they were “nothing life-threatening.”
The S.C. Highway Patrol on Monday released preliminary statewide and county-specific statistics on traffic accidents, fatalities, driving under the influence and tickets for Thanksgiving weekend, starting at 6 p.m. Nov. 21 and ending at midnight Sunday.
Statistics for York, Chester and Lancaster counties include:
York County:
• 20 crashes
• 429 citations for seat belt violations, DUI, speeding and drug possession
353 warnings
• 12 DUI cases, including any citations or arrests that could generate a court case.
Chester County:
• 11 crashes
187 citations
• 122 warnings
• 9 DUI cases
Lancaster County:
• 11 crashes
• 108 citations
• 152 warnings
• 4 DUI cases
The Highway Patrol didn’t report any fatalities in the three counties.
Eight people, including two pedestrians and a bicyclist, were killed on South Carolina roads this weekend, officials say. Five of those deaths occurred Friday through Sunday.
Statewide data for 2012 shows that until midnight Sunday, 101 pedestrians, 102 motorcyclists and 13 bicyclists died on state roads and highways.
Six people in Chester County have died in traffic accidents so far this year. The same number of people died last year, a decrease of four victims from 2010.
This year, seven people in Lancaster County have died in a car crash. Thirteen people died within the same time frame last year.
In York County, 23 people have died on the county’s roads this year. In 2011, 30 people died during the same period.
By Sunday, 744 people had died on the state’s highways in 2012. That’s down slightly from 766 who died last year from Jan. 1 to the Sunday after Thanksgiving.
