LANCASTER — Two people are dead after car crashes on major highways in both Lancaster and Chester counties Monday evening, authorities say.
In Lancaster County at about 5:10 p.m., a Kershaw man, 62, driving a 2007 Chevrolet pickup and wearing a seat belt was driving north on U.S. 601 when he veered to the left of the center lane and hit a 2004 International truck head-on, said Lance Cpl. Brent Kelly with the Highway Patrol.
The truck, driven by 34-year-old West Columbia man, then caught on fire, Kelly said.
The Kershaw man was pronounced dead on the scene, he said. It's unclear if truck driver was injured.
Both men were wearing seat belts, Kelly said. The pickup driver's identity was not immediately available Tuesday morning.

SC teen, 16, killed in wreck; brother, friend injured
RICHLAND COUNTY — The 18-year-old driver of a BMW that crashed early Friday morning on Shallow Brook Road in Richland County, killing his 16-year-old brother, was intoxicated, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.
Cameron Stringfellow, of Columbia, is being charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance, patrol Lance Cpl. Brent Kelly said.
Stringfellow and two passengers, one of them Stringfellow’s 16-year-old brother, John Cory Stringfellow, were traveling west in the 400 block of Shallow Brook Road near Harwell Drive in a BMW when the car struck a legally parked car around 2:10 a.m. The car went off the right side of the road and hit several trees, Kelly said.
Cameron Stringfellow and front-seat passenger Wesley Thompson, 18, were injured but survived the wreck. Cory Stringfellow died at the hospital. All three were wearing seat belts.
Cameron Stringfellow was treated and released, while Thompson remained in fair condition around 9:30 a.m. Friday, hospital spokeswoman Tammie Epps said.
Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said Cory Stringfellow was pronounced dead at 3:25 a.m.
The three attended Spring Valley High, Richland 2 spokesman Ken Blackstone said. Stringfellow and Thompson are seniors and the 16-year-old was a sophomore.
“We are deeply, deeply saddened by the loss of this student,” Blackstone said.
He said a crisis response team was on hand at the school to provide counseling to anyone who needed it.
The wreck comes at a time when many high school students are getting ready for graduation. Private schools began their graduations Friday. Public school ceremonies start Wednesday.
Law enforcement agencies are reminding parents to be vigilant about alcohol as teens celebrate such an important moment in their lives. South Carolina’s legal drinking age is 21.
A Highway Patrol collision investigation team is looking into the incident to determine if speed or other factors helped contribute to the wreck, Kelly said.

YEMASSEE, S.C. — The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating why a passenger tumbled out of a moving car on Interstate 95 and died after landing in front of a tractor-trailer.
Troopers say the fatal incident happened Sunday evening near the Jasper County community of Yemassee. Southbound traffic on I-95 was rerouted for almost three hours.
Highway Patrol Sgt. Bob Beres says the female passenger was riding in a southbound 1993 Buick 4-door driven by a 58-year-old Savannah, Ga., man. Rock Hill motorcyclist dies in crash
ROCK HILL — A Rock Hill motorcyclist died Saturday evening after he ran off the road and was thrown from his bike, officials say.
At about 6:35 p.m., Bobby Ray Hammond was traveling north on Barringer Road, three miles south of Rock Hill, when he ran off the left side of the road, struck a ditch and was thrown from the bike, said Lance Cpl. Tony Keller with the state Highway Patrol.
Hammond, 55, was pronounced dead at the scene, said York County Coroner Sabrina Gast.
Hammond was driving a 1999 Harley-Davidson and did not wear a helmet, Keller said.
No other injuries were reported.
On Wednesday, another Rock Hill motorcyclist was critically injured in a hit-and-run collision on Mount Gallant and Celanese roads.

At the same time, Jeremy Cord Mobley, 25, went to the police station, where he was questioned. Hours later, police charged both Franklin and Mobley with leaving the scene of an accident.
As of Thursday, police were still trying to determine who was at fault for the actual accident. Authorities have asked the public for more information about the hit-and-run.

Kershaw County coroner Johnny Fellers identified the man as Boyd Outlaw, 41, of Pine Grove Road in the Camden area.
"He was doing triple digits when the accident happened," Fellers said. "I don't know why he would want to run from the police that much."
Outlaw was not wearing a helmet when his 2006 Suzuki motorcycle struck a concrete island in the middle of U.S. 1 at the Springdale Road intersection near the Springdale Plaza shopping center, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.
The incident happened about 3 a.m.
Kershaw Sheriff Jim Matthews said early Sunday morning he is still gathering details and would likely release more information later today.
Fellers said he will order toxicology tests on Outlaw's body to see about any influence of drugs or alcohol.
