CHESTER — A military dump truck carrying loads of gravel on Highway 21 in Chester County flipped over, struck a tree and spilled fuel and debris into the roadway Friday afternoon.
Around 2:50 p.m., Richburg, Lando, Fort Lawn, Lando and Chester County emergency response crews flocked to the area of Highway 21 and S.C. Highway 223 toward Fort Lawn when they saw the truck on its side and its passengers entrapped, said Capt. Darryl Murray with the Fort Lawn Volunteer Fire Department.
Hard rainfall prevented the woman operating the vehicle from seeing the road clearly, Murray said, and she lost control of the truck before the crash. Neither person suffered life-threatening injuries but the man's hand was trapped between a door at one point and the woman complained of neck and back pain.
Diesel spilled into the road, prompting officials to call in a hazmat team, said Eddie Murphy, director of Chester County Emergency Management.
Both passengers were rushed to a nearby hospital. The highway was blocked for over an hour, Murray said, forcing drivers traveling southbound to Fort Lawn to find detours.
