Dog Attack

 — A baby and his grandmother were attacked by a dog Friday in Rock Hill.

Deputies met with a 41-year-old woman who said she was pushing her grandson in a stroller on Pine Grove Court in Rock Hill when the dog ran into the road and attacked them, according to a York County Sheriff’s report.

The dog scratched the infant, said Steve Stuber, director for York County Animal Control. According to the sheriff’s report, the woman said her grandson had a small red bruise and two scratches on his left leg after the attack, the report states.

Deputies found the dog’s owner, who confirmed that the dog did jump on the woman and baby. The dog has been placed under quarantine for 10 days to gauge if it has rabies, Stuber said.

The report does not list the infant’s age or specify what breed of dog attacked. The grandmother declined to comment.

I-77 Crash in South Carolina

Air Force Academy graduate was hit by driver going wrong way on Interstate 77

In the tight-knit community of the USC School of Law, Alan Martinez is a superstar.

“There’s no way you could not want to get to know him,” said Margaret Strom, a classmate. “He’s always helping people in any way he could.”

Martinez, in his second year, is “one of the people who knew everybody and everybody knew,” Strom said.

So when she and other students found out via text message that Martinez had been in a grisly wreck while on his way to work as a skydiving instructor at Skydive Carolina in Chester, they banded together to support him.

“We’ve been doing everything we can to help,” she said.

Martinez, 31, has been in a medically induced coma at Palmetto Health Richland’s intensive care unit since his car was hit head-on at about 6:30 a.m. Saturday morning by a driver headed south in a northbound lane of Interstate 77 outside Blythewood.

The other driver, Santos Gomez, 46, of Hickory, N.C., was charged with felony DUI and having an open container of alcohol and is also at the hospital, Highway Patrol spokesman Brent Kelly said.

Andrew Johnson and Martinez’ younger brother, Mike, both fellow law students, were tailgating outside Williams-Brice Stadium when they heard about the crash. Mike Martinez left for the hospital and Johnson and his friends waited for updates.

Johnson said they didn’t know the extent of Martinez’ injuries, but it wasn’t long before he and other students were at the hospital with the Martinez family.

Mike Martinez set up a Facebook page the same day, posting updates about his brother. Within four days, nearly 900 people subscribed to stay up to date on the Naples, Fla., native’s well-being.

Dozens of his friends have signed up to sit with the family nearly every waking hour through Saturday, and in law school classrooms, professors paused for moments of silence and passed around get-well cards for the student, Strom said.

James Burkhard, one of Martinez’ professors, said he has come to expect that kind of support from the law school’s students. Each class is split into a couple of groups that work together very closely and take all the same classes their first year.

When another student is hurt or experiencing difficulties, other students always have come to that person’s aid. He said he would have been surprised if he didn’t see the kind of support other students were giving Martinez, whom he called hard-working and outgoing.

Johnson and Strom and Alan Martinez were all in the same group of students their first year of law school, and they became fast friends.

“We’re trying to help out in any way we can,” he said.

But the law school isn’t the only place Martinez has friends hoping for a speedy recovery.

A graduate of the Air Force Academy who also served in the Air Force, Martinez loves the open air, Strom said. He’s vice president of USC’s Flying Gamecocks club and has leaped out of a plane more than 1,600 times, according to the club’s website. .

Martinez is also an animal lover. This year, he and a classmate set up the Student Animal Legal Defense Fund and was working to get the organization off the ground.

“He loves anything with a heartbeat,” Johnson said.

Pedestrian Hit by Car - Fatality

 — A runner hit by a car in Chester County on Labor Day has died, according to the Highway Patrol.

EMS took the woman to Edgemoor, where she was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center, said Chester County Coroner Terry Tinker. She later died.

Around 1:35 p.m., Charles Crockett, 61, was traveling south on Shirley Road in Fort Lawn when a pedestrian, a 49-year-old woman, running west entered the road and was hit by Crockett, who drove a 1978 Ford pickup truck, said Lance Cpl. Billy Elder with the Highway Patrol.

Crockett, who lives in Chester, was wearing a seat belt during the accident, Elder said.

 — Two men injured during a "head-on" collision on a Fort Mill highway and then airlifted to a Charlotte hospital Thursday evening have been discharged, hospital officials confirmed on Sunday.

Both Ahriel Greenfield, a 33-year-old man from Indian Land, and Lancaster's Mark Galleshaw, 22, were released from Carolinas Medical Center after paramedics flew them to the trauma unit when they suffered injuries during a collision.

Around 4 p.m. Thursday, Greenfield and Galleshaw were driving their separate cars, a 2008 Suzuki and a 2001 Hyundai respectively, on opposite sides of the roadway on Springfield Parkway when their cars collided, said Capt. Bryan Zachary with the Fort Mill Police Department.

Zachary said on Thursday that one of the drivers suffered a head injury while the other suffered a leg injury.

Neither driver was entrapped in the accident that forced crews to divert traffic for several hours. More details on the accident were not available Sunday.

2 airlifted after 'head-on' car crash on Fort Mill highway

 — Two motorists traveling in opposite directions on a Fort Mill highway were flown to a Charlotte hospital after a "head-on collision" Thursday evening.

The Fort Mill police and fire departments have blocked off Springfield Parkway near Merritt Road to finish an investigation into the accident, said Capt. Bryan Zachary with the Fort Mill Police Department.

Zachary wasn't able to provide many details but he said that two people were driving on opposite sides of the highway when they collided.

Zachary wasn't sure of the drivers' genders or where they were from, but he did say one driver suffered a head injury while the other suffered a leg injury. He was unable to say whether these injuries were "life threatening."

"It was serious enough that they had to be transported" by helicopter rather than by ambulance, Zachary said.

Accidental Motorcycle Death

Indian Land High grad who died in crash ‘was going places’

Read more here: http://www.heraldonline.com/2012/08/15/4190487/indian-land-high-grad-who-was.html#storylink=cpy

Thomas Russell Harris, a 2009 Indian Land High School graduate who stood out for his stellar grades, athletic ability and outgoing personality, died Saturday in a motorcycle accident.

Authorities said Harris, 21, was riding a motorcycle on U.S. 521 that evening when he drove off the road and hit a culvert pipe, which carries water from one side of the road to the other.

The S.C. Highway Patrol reported the accident over the weekend, but Harris’ identity wasn’t released until Tuesday.

Harris was taken to a Carolinas Medical Center in Waxhaw, N.C., where he died from injuries related to the accident.

Lancaster County Coroner Mike Morris said he is awaiting specifics from medical officials.

Harris was well known and adored by many on campus, Indian Land High Principal David Shamble said.

“You can throw any good adjective in there you want,” Shamble said. “It’s true. What a great young man. He was going places. The world was his oyster.”

At Indian Land High, Harris was ranked second in his class. He was in ROTC, wrestled and played football. He also was an Eagle Scout with Troop 275 and a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church.

“If you put together all of those traits that a new parent would love for their child to have, he has them,” Shamble said.

In 2009, Harris told the Fort Mill Times that he dreamed of being a United States Marine.

He graduated from Indian Land High that summer with acceptance letters from all three U.S. military academies – the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., the Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., and the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Harris received recommendations from former U.S. Rep. John Spratt and U.S. Sens. Jim DeMint and Lindsey Graham.

Harris chose the Naval Academy, where he attended until spring of this year.

“My dad taught me a lot about the Naval Academy, and sometime around the middle of my junior year I decided I really wanted to apply,” Harris said in June 2009. “It felt great to get into all three. I'm pretty excited.”

He was one of 1,200 students accepted to the Naval Academy that year, chosen from more than 15,000 applicants.

“I used to joke with him that we’ve at least had one president come from there,” said Shamble, referring to Andrew Jackson. “I told we were looking forward to having another – one from Indian Land.”

Rock Hill Crash

Rock Hill crash damages sign honoring S.C.’s first black female lawmaker

Read more here: http://www.heraldonline.com/2012/08/14/4189340/rock-hill-crash-damages-sign-honoring.html#storylink=cpyAt the S.C. Department of Transportation sign shop, workdays are spent replacing and fixing road signs that are clipped, run over and smashed by drivers.

But the most recently smashed York County sign was not just any sign – it bears the name of a political trailblazer in the neighborhood she called home.

A hit-and-run driver in Rock Hill damaged a sign honoring the first-ever black woman to serve in the General Assembly, the late Juanita Goggins.

To make matters worse, the driver damaged an expensive sign at the entrance to the Boyd Hill community that elderly neighbors do not have the money to replace.

The signs are on Rock Hill’s West Main Street at the corner of Bynum Avenue, just west of Cherry Road. Police are investigating, but it remains unclear who ran over the green “Juanita Goggins Highway” sign and cracked in half the wooden “Boyd Hill” neighborhood sign.

Goggins, a teacher, was first elected in 1974, re-elected in 1976 and 1978 before illness ended her political career in 1980. She died in 2010.

The stretch of West Main Street between Cherry Road and Heckle Boulevard was named in her honor a year before she died.

Her ex-husband, retired Rock Hill dentist Dr. Horace Goggins, still lives at the western limit of the neighborhood. An identical sign for eastbound motorists stands in front of the Goggins home as a proud reminder of Juanita Goggins’ service.

“It is a real shame that someone would hit the other sign,” Goggins said. “And to make it worse, whomever did it did not stop and tell anyone. That is what hurts the most.”

The sign was damaged just a couple of weeks before the Democratic National Convention arrives 25 miles north in Charlotte. Juanita Goggins was the first black woman from South Carolina to serve on the Democratic National Committee, which runs the convention.

A sign that honored Boyd Hill as Rock Hill’s neighborhood of the year in 1996 was also damaged, but a wooden neighborhood sign is a loss that has neighbors upset.

The custom-made “Boyd Hill Community, families working together” neighborhood sign – up since the mid 1990s – is identical to a sign on Constitution Boulevard on the other side of the neighborhood. The sign would cost more than $1,500 to replace.

“We don’t have that kind of money,” said Joe McMoore, president of the neighborhood association. “We had two fundraisers all those years ago to buy those signs. The signs are there so that everyone would feel welcome coming into Boyd Hill. Boyd Hill belongs to the people.”

Boyd Hill, bordered by Cherry Road to the east and Heckle Boulevard to the west, is home to many elderly residents who have lived in the predominantly black neighborhood for decades. A floodlight that shines on the sign so it can be seen at night also was destroyed.

“We love our signs and love our neighborhood,” said Floree Hooper, another neighborhood association member. “The sign welcomes people who live here home, but it also welcomes everyone to Boyd Hill.”

State Department of Transportation workers, alerted to the damage Monday by The Herald, immediately re-posted the state-owned Goggins sign on two new metal poles.

The poles that were sheared off in the wreck are made to break away if hit by a vehicle, said David Kelly, foreman of the sign shop for DOT’s York County operation.

The Goggins sign was warped and bent by the impact, but workers Ron Winters and Lee Wade, along with a state prison inmate from a work-release program, were able to save the sign.

A new sign would have cost several hundred dollars, Kelly said.

After his work was done, Lee said: “This sign matters to people. Nobody should knock it down.”

 — Authorities say one person is dead and two others injured after a motorcycle wreck in Georgetown County.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol says four motorcycles were involved in the crash after 8 p.m. on Saturday.

Troopers say the first three riders slowed down, but a fourth biker in the back did not and hit the other three.

All four bikers were thrown from their motorcycles. The rider on the back motorcycle was killed, and two others were sent to the hospital for treatment.

A fourth rider had on a helmet and suffered minor injuries.
